In a previous blog, Hillary shares with us how she used to be a people-pleaser, until she realized it was never going to earn her the love and approval she craved. When I researched the “Type C” personality (someone who might be likely to have cancer), guess what showed up?
A people-pleaser personality!
I so get that! For much of my life, I’ve been a people-pleaser, trying to “earn” someone’s love. It never really worked, because deep inside me, I doubted the love of anyone towards me. If I was never the “real” me, then someone’s love was for an act I was putting on just for them.
This led to living a chameleon-style life…changing “my colors” to fit your heart’s landscape. I carried it so far, I forgot what my own heart’s landscape was like.
I confess I think some of those 13 cancerous tumors came from buried resentments I had over trying so hard to please someone that I lost myself.
Does anything I’m saying here strike a gut reaction in you? I recommend you take some time now to journal about the thoughts and feelings that are coming up for you.
Hillary’s discovery–lucky for her she is still so young–really hit some buttons with me. She’s 100% right…God’s love is the only love that is unconditional. It’s the only love we can to take to the bank as pure gold.
Hey, friends, here’s the truth: you can look for love from all types of people, but eventually one of them (usually all) is going to do something that makes you doubt their love for you. Especially when you are as thin-skinned and sensitive to other’s opinions as we sisters are reported to be!
So what do you do, besides learn how to perform better to a new dance routine you don’t even like?
You look to God. You spend time getting to know God. You ask Him (yes, it is okay to do this) to show you His love. You read His Word.
And you invite Him into your heart. It is safe to do this, dear sisters. For God is love, pure and simple. His love is there for you 100% of the time. It is you that doubts His unconditional love for you: He never does. He knows He loves you as His beloved daughter. God is love. 1 John 4:8 confirms this.
John 15:13 (NLT) tells us that “there is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” This is exactly what Jesus did for us when He died on the cross to restore each of us into a loving relationship with God.
God Knows You and Loves You!
Dear sisters, God knows the real you. After all, He “made all the delicate, inner parts of your body and knit you together in your mother’s womb!” (Psalm 139:13 NLT)
Why? Because He wants to have a deep and personal relationship with you. Know this: you are the apple of His eye, His precious daughter, and His child.
I grew up believing I had to earn someone’s love. To be enough, to do enough, to please someone enough to be loved. It is so freeing today to know God loves the real me, just as I am. He hates my sin, which Jesus took away, but He loves me.
Think about this, my friend. His lasting love for you never fails. That’s a promise.
