Dear sisters, one of the things breast cancer taught me is this Truth:
I never, ever have to walk alone again!
I am so grateful for this teaching, even 18 years out from diagnosis and treatment. I went into this unwanted disease of breast cancer–with 13 cancerous tumors on board–thinking it was up to me to get through this. Alone.
Growing up in an alcoholic home, I thought I had only myself to rely on. This is NOT the way a child or healthy adult should live their life, depending only on themselves, and never trusting anyone else to really be there for them.
That is why breast cancer taught me such a wonderful Truth.
The kindness of people right from the start, including many I didn’t know, softened my heart. Consider your own cancer walk, my friend. Have you found help and support from people you didn’t know, or didn’t know well? Mind-blowing, isn’t it? Maybe a better word is heartwarming.
Sisters often tell me they met a Nurse Navigator who coordinated all their treatments and checkups, and this person was so helpful and kind. Or maybe they met another woman going through a diagnosis and treatment at the same time, and they walked together in mutual support.
No Matter Our Circumstances, We Always Have a Comforter
We also have this special gift to claim from Jesus. Jesus promises to give us His Holy Spirit when we turn to Him for help.
Jesus describes the Holy Spirit in John 14:16 (AKJV).
And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you for ever;
Would You Like to Walk Together?
Dear sisters, I would like to walk with you more personally, in much the same way I do when I lead a Bible study. This time, however, we will be walking with other women trying to navigate this same path from all over the country.
Beginning in January, I will be offering you a way to walk out your healing with other sisters. As a survivor who has a Masters degree in counseling education, with an emphasis (and love for) group work, I will be facilitating an online support group. I am also a teacher by training (and passion), and a Certified Christian Wellness Coach (because I don’t want ANY of us to ever get cancer again!)
Details will be released in the next blog, so stay tuned. But to give you a sneak preview:
- We will have a monthly live support group via phone or computer.
- We will also have a closed Facebook Support group where you can share your questions and thoughts privately with sisters who are walking with you. As often as you like, at any hour of the day or night. I will be participating in this group, too, to answer questions and offer support and encouragement.
- You will receive also a weekly blog devoted to the topic of the month from our monthly call.
The Best Part
If you and I think alike, I always wonder about the cost of something I’m interested in. Will I be able to afford it? Does it fit in with my monthly budget? And is it a good value?
I think you’ll say :Yes, Yes, Yes! to these questions.
Spoiler alert: this will be our own Christmas gift to ourselves, and you can unwrap it BEFORE Christmas.
Watch for the next blog for details!
God bless you, my friend.
